The Ringling Brothers Circus was founded in 1884 in Baraboo, Wisconsin by 5 of the 7 Ringling Brothers. The Ringling Brothers’ dad was a German immigrant. In 1907 the Ringling Brothers acquired the Barnum and Bailey Circus to become the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus billed as the “greatest show on earth.”
May 7th, 2017 is willed to be their last show at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
I, for one, am sad to see this national treasure end its run. I went to the circus several times when I was a child and was in awe every time — the huge elephants going through their paces, the guy being shot out of a canon, the trapeze, the tight rope, and all of those tricks on the horses. I loved the clowns and their silly antics (that, by the way, was before clowns were “scary” and just wonderfully funny entertainers).
Rest in Peace.
